Wopke Hoekstra

Commissioner for Climate Action, European Commission

Wopke Hoekstra is the European Commissioner for Climate Action since 9 October 2023 in the von der Leyen Commission.

Before this, Hoekstra was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the fourth Rutte cabinet and Minister of Finance in the third Rutte cabinet. From 2011 to 2017 he was a member of the Dutch Senate.

Hoekstra studied law at Leiden University and LUISS Guido Carli in Rome and obtained an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau. Previously, he was partner at McKinsey and worked for Shell. He also was president of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch National Maritime Museum and ambassador of the Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology.

Hoekstra and his wife Liselot have four children and live in Bussum. He enjoys sports and reading.
